Memoria del Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín. Joy Harjo nació en Tulsa, Oklahoma, Estados Unidos, en 1951. Pertenece a la Nación Muskogee. En la Universidad de Nuevo México realizó estudios de pintura y teatro. También escribió canciones para una banda de rock, Poetic Justice, de la que ha sido cantante y también intérprete del saxofón. Ha publicado, entre otros, los libros de poemas: The Last Song, 1975; What Moon Drove Me to This?, 1979; She Had Some Horses, 1983; Secrets from the Center of the World, 1989; In Mad Love and War, 1990; The Woman Who Fell from the Sky, 1994; The Good Luck Cat, (libro para niños), 2000; A Map to the Next World, 2000; How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems: 1975-2001, 2002; A Map to the Next World: Poems and Tales, 2001. También ha publicado en revistas tales como Massachusetts Review, Ploughshares, River Styx, Contact II, The Bloomsbury Review, Journal of Ethnic Studies, American Voice, Sonora Review, Kenyon Review, Beloit Poetry Review, Greenfield Review y Puerto del Sol. Ha enseñado en la Universidad de Colorado, en la Universidad de Arizona, en la Universidad de Nuevo México y en la Universidad de California. Su obra poética ha recibido múltiples reconocimientos en Norteamérica, entre ellos el premio William Carlos Williams Award de la Poetry Society of America, por el mayor libro de poesía, en 1991.
